SCAD seeks a full-time professor art history to join the university’s art history department, the largest group of full-time faculty devoted to art history in the U.S.. Candidates should be proficient in either half of the Survey of Western Art and can expect to also teach classes in their area of expertise.
In this role, you will contribute to the undergraduate and graduate core curriculum and develop and teach advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in areas of specialization including visual culture, new media, photography and film.
The SCAD art history department includes 31 professors who specialize in topics ranging from the ancient world to contemporary art. Faculty members are award-winning practicing artists and designers who continually share research with colleagues in the discipline. The department is an institutional member of the American Academy in Rome; the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum; Computers and the History of Art Group; Rhizome; the American Alliance of Museums; and a member of the managing committee of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens.
The ideal candidate possesses the ability to motivate students to think creatively and critically, and work with students and faculty of diverse backgrounds, as well as demonstrate enthusiasm for working with a variety of learning styles at a leading arts university. You should have leadership experience and proven classroom success.
A background in museum studies or curatorial experience is a plus, as it will enable you to take full advantage of the premier exhibitions and collections at the world-class SCAD Museum of Art. A background in the history of film is also welcome, in order to teach in the University’s Cinema Studies program.
This is your chance to work with talented students within the historic district of Savannah, Georgia, a walkable, bikeable coastal city that provides a living laboratory for the study of art and design.
Requirements:
⎯ Ph.D. in art history or a related field
⎯ College-level teaching experience
⎯ Ability to teach either or both halves of the Survey of Western Art History
⎯ Experience teaching upper level undergraduate courses in area of expertise preferred
